If Barack Obama Could Inspire People Of All Races, So Can I

By Valerie Green

One thing that astonished me so much about this whole election was how Barack Obama was able to inspire not only black people, but people of all races! The way this country is and the negativity of seeing a black person at such a high position, it was amazing how a black person could have such a big influence on whites, asians, hispanics, etc. I thought to myself, that is the way I want to be with people. When people hear my name, I want them to light up and be inspired by me the same way that they were with Obama. On my current job, I get great compliments from mostly white people which is shocking to me because I’m a young 25 year old black female. I asked myself, what is it about me that makes these people feel good enough to strike up wonderful conversations with me or tell me how great and kind I am? I figure I must have that Obama glow about me.

Honestly, there was a part of me that thought that some white people would change their mind about voting for Obama at the last minute and vote for Mccain. The day after the election when I saw all of these white people celebrating Obama’s victory, I was really amazed. I started thinking about all the things that I’m trying to pursue and pictured myself standing somewhere giving a speech and having that many white people excited about the things that they see this young black girl from Fayetteville, North Carolina achieving. I may not have been that into the election, but I do have to say that Barack Obama has inspired me to attain that same charisma and greatness in reaching my goals.

Right now I am just another unknown person and that’s okay because I know that if I stay focused on what I need to do and continue to share my story, one day someone will come up to me or write me and tell me that reading my blogs inspired them.
