If Barack Obama Could Inspire People Of All Races, So Can I

By Valerie Green

One thing that astonished me so much about this whole election was how Barack Obama was able to inspire not only black people, but people of all races! The way this country is and the negativity of seeing a black person at such a high position, it was amazing how a black person could have such a big influence on whites, asians, hispanics, etc. I thought to myself, that is the way I want to be with people. When people hear my name, I want them to light up and be inspired by me the same way that they were with Obama. On my current job, I get great compliments from mostly white people which is shocking to me because I’m a young 25 year old black female. I asked myself, what is it about me that makes these people feel good enough to strike up wonderful conversations with me or tell me how great and kind I am? I figure I must have that Obama glow about me.

Honestly, there was a part of me that thought that some white people would change their mind about voting for Obama at the last minute and vote for Mccain. The day after the election when I saw all of these white people celebrating Obama’s victory, I was really amazed. I started thinking about all the things that I’m trying to pursue and pictured myself standing somewhere giving a speech and having that many white people excited about the things that they see this young black girl from Fayetteville, North Carolina achieving. I may not have been that into the election, but I do have to say that Barack Obama has inspired me to attain that same charisma and greatness in reaching my goals.

Right now I am just another unknown person and that’s okay because I know that if I stay focused on what I need to do and continue to share my story, one day someone will come up to me or write me and tell me that reading my blogs inspired them.

Barack Obama urges Congress to pass financial rescue package or face deep depression

quote:

President-Elect Barack Obama says that the deepening American recession could last for years if Congress fails to approve swiftly his plan to pump at least $775 billion into the economy in the biggest financial rescue package since the Great Depression. Warning of unemployment of more than ten per cent, Mr Obama said that only massive government spending could revive the economy. "Only government can provide the short-term boost necessary to lift us from a recession this deep and severe. Only government can break the vicious cycles that are crippling our economy," Mr Obama said in excerpts of a speech to be delivered today. "I don't believe it's too late to change course, but it will be if we don't take dramatic action as soon as possible," he added. "A bad situation could become dramatically worse." His biggest speech since his election in November, coming just 12 days before his inauguration, was designed to pressurise Congress to act within weeks on complex legislation that normally would take months of debate. Opposition Republicans were due to react quickly to his remarks, and may baulk at nearly doubling the projected 2009 deficit of $1.2 trillion. Estimates for Mr Obama's rescue plan vary from $775 billion to $1.2 trillion. It will include $300 billion in middle class tax cuts and tax relief for businesses, massive spending on infrastructure and aid for states that are deep in the red. In his prepared remarks at George Mason University in Virginia, Mr Obama also pledged to overhaul the financial regulatory system which allowed subprime mortgage lending to escalate to disastrous levels. "Wall Street has not worked, our regulatory system has not worked the way it's supposed to. We're going to have to look at this alphabet soup of agencies and figure out how do we get them to work together more effectively," he said. The two months since his historic election as the first black president have brought unremitting bad economic and financial news. Consumers are holding on to their cash and companies are failing as the recession deepens under collapse of the housing market, slow credit provision and trillions of dollars that vanished on the stock market. The recession, which started in December 2007, already is the longest in a quarter-century. A new report was expected to show that the number of newly unemployed signing up for unemployment benefits last week rose to 540,000, up from 492,000 in the previous week.Barack Obama urges Congress to pass financial rescue package or face deep depression, Jan 2009
